HIP-HOP MOVIES 101:NOW LET’S KEEP IT REAL!!!
Now as “REAL” as some “HIP-HOP MOVIES” may seem, not all of them convey “REAL HIP-HOP”. The movie’s that started it all for me was of course KRUSH GROVE, which debuted LL‘s raw energy, WILD STYLE, and BREAKIN!!! Now There are so many other movies to name so let’s get started with one of the best in DO THE RITE THING, A Spike Lee Joint!!! This movie nearly single handedly helped launch the Legendary Revolutionary Golden Era in conjunction with PUBLIC ENEMIES video FIGHT THE POWER!!!(check out FIGHT THE POWER in PUBLIC ENEMY 101:FIGHT THE POWER) Then there’s of course NEW JACK CITY, BOY’S IN THE HOOD, & MENACE TO SOCIETY, All of which beaconed in the street knowledge era. And then of course there’s SCARFACE. Now let’s just stop here for a moment. SCARFACE didn’t start out as a HIP-HOP joint but is now a Cult Classic in “ALL” Hip-Hop circles!!! It doesn’t matter if your EAST-COAST, WEST COAST,THE DIRTY SOUTH or whatever!!! Now nearly every rapper no matter who they are has a piece of SCARFACE memorabilia in their crib…period. Then there’s the comedies like FRIDAY 1,2 & 3,TALES FROM THE HOOD,CB4 and HALFBAKED!!! Then there are more current romantic HIP-HOP flicks like LOVE & BASKETBALL,BROWN SUGAR and HONEY all dope. Then there is more serious flicks like BELLY staring DMX , NAS, & METHOD MAN. Also CLOCKERS,COLORS,WAIST DEEP COVER,BELLY and then there is 8 MILE Ah yes 8 MILE: Passion. Drive. Perseverance. Unfortunately I’m not a “Big” Emenim fan because he made an “underground” racist song called “OH SO MANY STYLES” when he first started out. But he is said to be “THE ABSOLUTE BEST FREESTYLE BATTLE RAPPER IN THE WORLD!” Being from Detroit myself I didn’t like the way they treated me either, that’s why I stay in Miami now. Plus the fact MIAMI is a virtual paradise. Yea man I didn’t like the way they treated me and IM BLACK!!! So I could imagine what he went threw. If you have seen this movie 8 time’s watch it again because it show’s you what it take’s to persevere in this game we call Hip-Hop. Now is it a “true” Hip-Hop flick? Well it is the highest grossing & critically acclaimed Hip-Hop movie ever made and maybe that’s what makes it “REAL” But ya boy CALI doesn’t measure real by the dollar!!! I’m CALLOUS the FUTURISTIC MILITANT and I measure REAL by what you HALLA!!! Last but not least is another Spike Lee joint and one of my best pick’s of all time BAMBOOZLED!!! staring DAMON WAYANS, SAVION GLOVER, JADA PINKETT-SMITH, TOMMY DAVIDSON, MICHAEL RAMPAPORT and a laundry list of some of HIP-HOP’S FINEST like MOSDEF:Big Blak Afrika,CHARLIE BALTIMORE:Smooth Blak,GANO GRILLS:Double Blak,DJ SCRATCH:Jo Blak,muMs da Schemer:Hard Blak and THE SCIENTIFIC CHAMPION CANIBUS:Mo Blak as THE MAU MAU’s!!! M.C.’s have their rhymes, Break Dancers have their “gear” But D.J.’s and Producers have the "GLUE" that holds it all together. By “COLLECTING” VINYL or using SERATO and making “THE MUSIC” or in REAL HIP-HOP terms “THE BEATS”. When HIP-HOP first started, DJ’s like KOOL HERC would put on “Instrumentals” and rock block parties and that’s how it all began. So first let’s talk about the beautiful ART of VINYL COLLECTING. Some say this “MAGNIFICENT” art form is “DEAD” but I disagree. Even with “NEW” Technology such as SERATO, Some DJ’s still prefer cutting real “VINYL” because of the groves and the feel in the records. But some say SERATO is easier than crate caring & crate digging. Most "REAL DJ’s" have an unprecedented “STOCK PILE” and CRATES upon CRATES upon CRATES of RECORDS!!! This is said to be what defines the “REAL DJ’s” from the “modern day” SERATO Kids.But nowadays even more & more DJ's are turning to SERATO!!! Some say it's a 70-30 split in favor of SERATO.But in my opinion the only way “REAL HIP-HOP” is going to make a comeback is with sampling, scratching and raiding these “STOCK PILES” of mirth & gold!!! When RAKIM first came out it was ERIC B and RAKIM!!! Not the other way around!!! That is how important the DJ was!!! And still is!!! The absence of cutting, sampling, mixing and scratching shows!!! These Kid’s now a days are just living on Technology and not skills!!! STOCK PILING is HISTORY and HISTORY cannot be replaced!!! And as much as these young Kids have to offer with Technology EXPERIENCE cannot be replaced!!! Listen HISTORICAL STOCK PILING takes “years” upon “years” to attain and as far as “Skills” go, well there is no substitute for perfecting your craft. And VINYL RECORD COLLECTING perfects a “DJ’S EAR” for music and timing!!! From KOOL HERC to DJ Q-BERT a DJ is only as good as their “Arsenal” So big up to the DJ’s Who still “STOCKPILE”!!!But SERATO is like taking over man.It's a complex argument. Now as far as Producers goes DR. DRE is said to be one of the best “EVER” but there is also, TIMBALAND,THE NEPTUNES,WYCLEFF,DJ PERMIRE(Who some say is the best) and of course my “PERSONAL ALL TIME FAVORITE” THE RZA!!! Now THE RZA is so “ILL” that he has even “TRANSENDED” from just “producing” Albums to doing movie soundtracks!!! THE RZA in my opinion can do it all.. play music, sample, mix, DJ, MC you name it The RZA iz one of the best from a REAL HIP-HOP purest perspective. BUT...the way it is NOW DRE has the most PLATINUM ALBUMS and also “Teach's” people “how” to produce and that is what makes him one of the best in this particular category. It’s like everyone who comes under his wing becomes a “GRADE A” Producer from Snoop, to Warren G to Eminem and the list goes on & on. Out of all the sports in the world, Only “ONE SPORT” has the “ENERGY”, ”FIRE” ,“SPIRIT” & “THE RHYTHM” of “REAL HIP-HOP”… BASKETBALL!!! From every “summertime” street B-ball player to DR. J to George Gervin to The Harlem Globetrotters to Jeramio Moon to MIKE, KOBE & SHAQ, B-BALL has always has its own rhythm of attitude and greatness!!! KURTIS BLOW made a song about it. Which was later remade by Lil’ Romeo. Speaking of Lil’ Romeo, he has even got a scholarship to play B-BALL at The UNIVERSITY of SOTHERN CALIFORNIA. His Father MASTER P was also so good at “balling” that he even almost made it to the NBA. B-BALL is so close to REAL HIP-HOP that even SHAQ rapped for a little while, and It wasn’t half bad!!! My man RASHEED WALLACE from MY DETROIT PISTONS made a guest appearance on one of E-40’s albums and said it “BEST” when he said that he was only into “REAL HIP-HOP” like RED MAN & WU-TANG he wasn’t into the GOODIE MOBS & especially not into THE E-40’s!!!LOL!!! and then theirs ALLEN IVERSON who was HIP-HOP in the NBA before there was HIP-HOP in the NBA!!! IVERSON was the first to rock it raw with Tattoo’s, Braids, Chains and Earring’s… you know HIP-HOP Flavor!!! THE NBA didn’t like it, but now it’s in the whole NBA beyond the “NEW” dress code.STEPHON MARBURY(STARBURY) who is from NEW YORK causing all kinds of “trouble” now with his HIP-HOP attitude!!! And then there’s AND 1. With superstars like HOT SAUCE, THE PROFESSOR, THE AIR UP THERE, A-O, BAD SANTA,THE HELLICOPTER, and SKIP-TO-MY LOU (who started in AND 1 but is in the NBA rite now) all take it to the next level!!! These (Brothers in Arms‘) Separately they where the STANDERD!!!But when they combined forces,. IT WAS OVER!!!THEY BLEW UP HIP-HOP!!!That’s it. Because not only did they have UNDERGROUND success they had COMMERCIAL success as well..(Especially with the Def Jam 2000 push!!!Doing Cameo’s almost as much as the CAMEO KING BUSTA RHYMES!! Red & Meth are Both such top notch spitters that Nobody even attempted to battle them!!!BLACK OUT was such a HIP-HOP CLASSIC that nearly every song on the Album stayed in heavy rotation.
